Note.
Nếu động từ tường thuật ở Thì hiện tại đơn giản (Simple Present), Thì hiện tại hoàn thành (Present Perfect) hoặc Thì tương lai đơn giản (Simple Future), động từ trong lời nói trực tiếp ở Thì nào ắt động từ của mệnh đề phụ ở Thì nấy.
Ví dụ :
- She says : "They are waiting outside" ---> She says that they are waiting outside.
- She has just said : "They are waiting outside".
---> She has just said that they are waiting outside.
- She will say : "They are waiting outside".
--->She will say that they are waiting outside.
* Tuy nhiên, động từ của mệnh đề phụ sẽ đổi Thì nếu động từ tường thuật ở Thì quá khứ.
Ví dụ :
- She said , "They are waiting outside".
---> She said that they were waiting outside.
- She said , "They will understand it". ---> She said that they would understand it.
- She said , "I never smoke". ---> She said that she never smoked .
- She said , "I have lived here for five years"
---> She said that she had lived there for five years.
- She said , "My grandfather died five years ago".
---> She said that her grandfather had died five years before.
- They said , "We have just heard from our teacher".
---> They said that they had just heard from their teacher.
Đặc biệt
Đối với sự thật hiển nhiên không bao giờ thay đổi, động từ trong lời nói trực tiếp ở Thì nào ắt động từ của mệnh đề phụ ở Thì nấy. Chẳng hạn, He said, "The earth revolves round the sun". ---> He said that the earth revolves round the sun.
